3 WAYS ON HOW TO GET LESS IGNORANT—LEARNING HOW TO GET MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE
Knowledge is power; ignorance is weakness. And “to be conscious of your ignorance is a great step in knowledge”—Benjamin Disraeli
I’ve taken a closer look at this and I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s nothing that is more deadly than being ignorant, nothing at all. And it is even way worse than when you’re ignorant of something, yet you claim you know, it’s way more pathetic.
If there is really one thing that fuels foolishness, it is ignorance. Ignorance is a state of unawareness. It’s more like living in the dark and seeing no light, not even a dim of it. And “this disease of ignorance can only be cured in the school of knowledge”—Anonymous.
To make this more interesting, do you know that ignorance is not just a “state”, also, some people live out ignorance. This is, it’s their lifestyle and they are totally so unaware of so many things and yet they are not aware that they are not aware, you get the gist, right?
There is this cliché that people normally say, especially Africans, which says, “What you don’t know cannot kill you”, rubbish! Yet, these same set of people “die” on a daily basis just because of what they don’t know and don’t want to know.
Now, you may wanna ask, “How does one go about resolving this?” well, you can resolve this by getting a little less ignorant and there are various ways you can make this happen, a lot of them actually.
Getting knowledge is the most sensible and wise thing you can ever do for yourself, that is if you truly love yourself. It’s like getting a magic wand that can give you all the powers of the world, and just like I said with the opening remark that knowledge is power, and it sure is.
In a sense, there is nothing wrong with not knowing about something, however, there is everything wrong in not knowing about something and still claiming you do. That’s really a dumb thing to do if you ask me, honestly.
So, basically, in this article, we’ll be looking at 3ways on how you can get less ignorant. It’s more like getting to know, rather than assuming you do. Remember; assumption kills the mind.
Don’t assume anything you are not sure of. If you don’t know say you don’t know and nobody will murder you for it. Just don’t get used to not knowing things, you know that kind of thing.
Now, below are the 3ways you can try out;
FIRST BE WILLING TO LEARN
In this life, before you begin going about wanting to know about something, anything, you really have to be first willing to learn no matter how the person you wanna learn from is or the kind of condition that is available at present.
Learning has to first come from the mind, and when I say from the mind, there’s really gonna be a whole of willingness coming from there. And I know that before you can be willing to learn, you’ve to be aware that you don’t know, and truly humble yourself so that you can know.
I guess one of the reasons we’ve so many ignorant folks walking around is because they really don’t have the willingness to learn what they don’t know. You can imagine someone having so much pride in what he doesn’t even have a clue about, such foolishness!
Is not that he knows what he’s saying or something, he just claims that he knows it and that claim won’t make him wanna really know about such a thing, you can imagine that.
The human ego can be such a destructive thing. It is what really makes people not wanting and willing to learn even if they know for sure that they know nothing about what they claim to know.
In order to learn, you really don’t have to be ashamed of it. There is really no shame in there, as a matter of fact, being willing is what will truly make you learn accurately and even more.
There is a lot of people who would have been better off than they are, but the fact that they are not ready and willing to learn, keeps them in one spot.
Get this now; there’s no other way to be a learnt person if you’re not willing to learn. Just remove whatever pride and ego in your mind that is making you not learn, and bring humility to the picture and see how you’ll learn, rapidly.
ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS
Yes, read that again, and again. Make asking questions your habit. Don’t just go around keeping bunch of nonsensical assumptions in your mind, thinking that something is as it is when for a fact, it is the other way round.
You don’t know something, then ask questions. Being quiet and acting dumb won’t automatically put knowledge in your head. So, quit being quiet as such.
Now, don’t think that asking questions will make you look foolish, well it might, but only “for a few seconds”. However, “not asking at all will make you foolish for a lifetime.”
You know, people can be very funny at times. You’ll just see them doing something as if they know exactly what they are doing. Because of their pompous nature, they don’t ask questions, so they end up doing rubbish.
Honestly, I don’t really know what’s up with people and asking questions. Why do they feel that asking questions will somehow reduce them or diminish their reputation or something, why?
Just so you know, what people actually think about you is TNOYDB—totally none of your damn business. So quit thinking of what they would think about you, and start thinking of what you would think about yourself when you refuse to ask about something you don’t have a clue about, yes think of that!
Don’t see asking questions as one impossible thing to do. If you really want to get a little less ignorant, then asking questions will be of a great help to you.
However, don’t go asking annoying and irritating questions which are not relevant. Ask sincere questions that you know you’ll learn from and that will help you elevate your knowledge level.
READ, READ, READ
Now, here comes the most difficult of all; reading. Most people already know that they need to read –a lot, in order to become less ignorant, yet they still find it hard to do so for one reason or the other. And this is not just a one-sided continental problem, it’s actually universal.
Reading is one way to broaden your horizon and improve your thinking faculty skill. I mean, you can’t possibly think that you can improve on your knowledge level by solely relying on just what people say to you.
If at all you choose to just listen to them, how are you so sure that they are saying the right thing when you don’t go back and read for yourself, how? No, just tell me how?
Personally, reading is one of the best ways to grow and develop yourself. I mean, all there is to know about this life is already written down. All you really have to do is to sort out the ones that are of relevant to you and read them up.
Don’t just read, because you read an article that says reading is a way of getting less ignorant. Read willfully and wholeheartedly. Make it into a habit, a form of ritual that you do. You may struggle with it initially, but consequently it will work out fine.
Recently, I’ve come to know that reading is one thing that helps me to know more about whatever thing I wanted to learn in this life.
Now, you may want to ask, “What do I read?” There’s really a lot of things you can read. There is a lot of self-help books that you can read, try finding them out and see the ones that suit your taste. Also, you can go online and read articles on blogs and blogposts and other websites, just like the one you’re reading now.
Whatever you do in this life, just try to always read, it will help you even when you least expected. Reading takes you from your position of static-ness to a point of broader views and understanding. Cultivate the habit of reading, it will really help you a lot
So in all, you can see that getting less ignorant is not so much of a hard work after all. You just need to take baby steps and gradually you’ll see yourself getting more knowledgeable. Mind you, these ways are just part of what you can do to move out of your “ignorance room”. There are really other ways, but these ones are primary and key and without them, others won’t be effective. So apply them from today.
